What we have achieved so far...

2005

  • Awarded by UN Habitat for our efforts towards conservation around Lake Victoria.
  • Trained Kombo Youth Fishing Group based at Yala swamp on group management and leadership supported by Nature Kenya and Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).
  • Participated in drafting a Site Action Plan for Dunga swamp facilitated by Nature Kenya and National Museums of Kenya and involving the community and other swamp stakeholders.
  • Coordinated and involved teachers from schools involved in the school outreach programme in coming up with a guide to be used in environmental education on wetlands. This exercise was funded by Rufford small grants programme.
  • Launched this web site with the support of Rufford small grants programme to increase our outreach.
2004

  • Helped to form a site support group Kombo Youth Fishing Group in Yala Swamp- An Important Bird Area (IBA) and Kenya's largest swamp so as to help LVSB in the conservation of the swamp and its biodiversity.
  • Organized and coordinated schools in the planting of 1025 tree seedlings in Chemase, South Nandi Escarpment (one of Lake Victoria's catchment areas) during the World Environment Day. The Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, Kenya Wildlife Service, Nature Kenya and Lake Victoria Environmental Management Programme (LVEMP) supported this event.
  • Participated in a DANIDA/Nature Kenya project ' Building on Experience' which involved networking of the various site support groups based at the Kenyan Important Bird Areas through exchange visits, communication and a nature fair.
2003

  • Initiation of the Lake Victoria Papyrus wetlands monitoring programme through training and support from Nature Kenya, National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB).
  • Involved in carrying out a stakeholders survey to help in formulating a Site Action Plan for Dunga swamp facilitated by Nature Kenya, National Museums of Kenya (NMK) and the Royal Society for the protection of Birds (RSPB).
  • Participated in the Kenyan chapter of the World Bird watch event together with the Kakamega Environmental Education Programme (KEEP) members.
2002

  • Initiation of a LVSB School outreach programme involving 10 schools through a grant from the Bird Committee (Nature Kenya).
  • Participated in the development of a paper on environmental issues to be presented to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa facilitated by Nature Kenya.
  • Involved by National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) in training a group based at Dunga swamp-Dunga Ecotourism Association (DECTTA) on bird watching skills and tour guiding.
